Lost Dog
Found
On Tuesday, October 3, 2000 Alice Barz wrote to the Samoyed Rescue List (SRL – a "by invitation only" email list) about a female Samoyed in a shelter.  She was estimated to be about 5 yrs old and had some type of skin disorder.   Despite concerns of the problem being contagious, Alice, with the help of Rosemary Rambo, sprung this girl from the shelter.  She learned this dog was not five, but closer to eight.  Upon returning home, she kept this girl isolated from her own dogs.  Crystal, as Alice was calling her, had open sores and patchy fur, a strong odor, and would leave an oily imprint wherever she lay.  Plus, Alice suspected kennel cough.

A visit to the vet determined that Crystal did have a staph/yeast infection and kennel cough.  The vet also learned she was heartworm negative and spayed.  Alice was ready to help Crystal get back to full health.

On Sunday, October 8, 2000, Alice wrote “the rest of the story:”

Well, folks, guess what happened to me and Crystal today???  I was clipping Crystal's yeasty furballs when a had a brainstorm... I remembered a woman I had called in August who had an ad in the wrong section of the paper about her 10 1/2 year old dog. (It was in the Adopt-a-pet section of the paper...I seldom (but should) check the lost pet ads...Crystal's ad was in the wrong section.)

When I called her she told me that the dog was missing, she wasn't looking to find a home for her!  I said okay, I'll keep my eye out for her.  Then I promptly forgot about it, and her.

Today I found the piece of paper w/ the woman's name and number. I was cutting Crystal's hair and I remembered talking to this woman, and I was suddenly sure that this was her dog. I called and said I had an old female that might be her girl, and I asked her to describe her.  Two things matched: chewing her paws, and her red eyes. Crystal did not have a yeast/staph infection when she left, so it was probably brought on by being outside in the rain and never getting dry...There was enough there for the woman to come out and see if this was indeed her girl, and magically, sammy lovers and rescuers, it was!!!!

After being lost since August, these people were sure that their girl was dead.  Nobody responded to their ad, and they had given up hope...

These people live in the county south of the shelter where Crystal ended up.  A construction worker brought her in one Friday after she was hanging out at his work site and he finally figured out she was lost.

You should have seen the spring in her step, the way her tail went up, and the confusion she felt: grateful to me, disbelieving that her mom had actually come for her…think how long 6 weeks is in the life of an old dog, or any dog, for that matter?

Well, this is my first time finding the owner of a dog that has been lost and rescued...It's a neat feeling! This poor girl had lived her entire life, 10 1/2 years w/ this family, and I am so glad she has beenr eturned and can finish her life w/ them!

The lady walked up to the steps, carrying her photograph of Crystal, keys in her hand, she kneeled down and embraced her dog and said how incredible to have her returned and alive! How happy her children would be to have her back!

From start to finish this was a rescue guided by the holy spirit...The way I got her out of the shelter, w/ advice from all of you, the help I got from Rosemary Rambo, and the way I had a feeling that she belonged to the woman with her ad in the wrong section of the paper.  What are the chances? I don't know, but I do know this: there are no coincidences- everything happens for a reason, just as Crystal's rescue has done.

Anyone who knows me, knows my head is in the clouds, that I can't remember one minute to the next and I am frequently distracted.  That I remembered this woman from over 6 weeks ago and called mistakenly is nothing less than a miracle. The fact that I would not have called her at all, had the dog been listed under lost and found, cause I seldom even glance at those (even if I should!)  Also that I found the name and number from a stack of debris on my computer desk...Thank God for clutter!

     Wahooo! Crystal is home!

(note: Alice is well known for her "rescue jigs" - below is one she wrote for Crystal)

    Swing that Crystal,
    round and round,
    here comes mom now,
    watch her bound!
    silly old Crystal,
    she got lost!
    Now she's sick
    and coughs and coughs!
    Crystal's home now,
    lets all clap!
    happy Crystal
    takes a nap!
