Olsen was chosen
as this issue's "featured rescue" because he sums up so much of what rescue
groups see on a regular basis. Surrendered because of a life change the
owners were not willing to include him in, kept as an outdoor dog, yet even
his picture shows he's ready for whatever might come next. Watch for further
updates on Olsen's progress!
OLSEN
Written by Carol
Hjort, North Carolina Samoyed Rescue
Olsen is a 7 1/2 year old owner release male
who is in rescue as a result of his owners divorce. Upon talking with his
former owner, we discovered that he was purchased from a puppy mill in
the Charlotte, NC area and we suspect he may be a sibling of Calypso, a
bitch that was pulled out of another puppy mill in Salisbury, NC by Sammy
Rescue about two years ago.
Olsen was in terrible condition when he was
turned over to rescue. He had been kept strictly as an outside dog, and
he had spent much of his life chained to a tree or a stake. He had been
shaved down numeroustimes over the years due to severe matting, and we
suspect he has "post clipping alopecia" as a result of the shavings. There
were razor burns and flaking skin over much of his torso, and he has a
calloused area around his neck area as a result of his years spent on a
chain.
Veterinary evaluation revealed that he was
heartworm positive, but otherwise healthy. Thanks to the wonderful assistance
of the Sammy Angels
and the Diamond
Program, Olsen is currently undergoing heartworm treatment with his
foster family, Emi and Mark Kooyman in NC. Thanks to the love and attention
of the Kooymans, Olsen is now housebroken, crate trained, leash trained,
and is getting along well with other dogs and people. Who says "you can't
teach an old dog new tricks??"
Olsen is truly an example of the resiliency
and adaptability of the Samoyed spirit!! Despite his years of neglect,
he has maintained his sweet and trusting disposition and continues to wear
his beautiful Sammy smile wherever he goes!! You may see Olsen in the 2000
SCA National Specialty Rescue Parade...proudly escorted by his foster parents,
Emi and Mark!
